Google Does It Right

Google is a company that does a lot of things right. One of them is how it talks to the public.

Even as the most successful Internet company, and one of the world’s biggest by market cap, Google avoids the traditional press release approach to PR. In fact, other than Investor Relations releases, Google does very few press releases.

Take, for example, the launch of the new look for Gmail. Hundreds of millions of people around the world use Gmail. You probably have an account. But rather than a big press release and news conference, Google posted to its blog. The post had this video from an affable Gmail User Experience designer:

About 700,000 people have already viewed this video on YouTube or the Google news blog. That is a pretty strong reach. Many more will have read the text.

Equally important, by communicating directly with its customers and influencers, Google avoids any negative filtering by the media. It is all about an honest, factual and “human” conversation with the people that matter to your brand.

Thanks Google, for showing the world there is a better way.

  1. Interesting stuff. But I think a critic’s eye (i.e. the media) is still relevant. Not sure “bypassing” media is always a good thing for the public in order to get the big picture. Thoughts?

Kevin – I think the media still plays an important role, but too many businesses/governments/not-for-profits still act as the the only way to reach the public is through the media.

The Google news still got lots of media coverage – but the media had access to the same information as the consumer.
